The 2010 Career Shadow Program is underway. Started more than 15 years ago, the Wethersfield Career Shadow Program is a community-based, collaborative effort between the Wethersfield Chamber of Commerce and the Wethersfield Public Schools. Chaired by Carla Unwin, Sterling Jewelers, a member of the Chamber of Commerce. The Career Shadow Program affords students the opportunity to observe the workplace firsthand.
The Career Shadow Program is designed to increase career awareness, help the student in the decision-making process and reinforce the link between classroom learning and work requirements.
With technology changing the face of the working world and with career and educational options becoming more competitive, today’s students are faced with increasingly difficult decisions. Obtaining realistic information about a career field is important for all students. Through a SHADOW experience students learn about a job by walking through the workday as a shadow to a competent worker (mentor). The job shadowing experience is a short (two hours to 1 full day) unpaid exposure to the workplace in an occupational area of interest to the student. Students witness firsthand the work environment, the training required, and occupational skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
Upcoming Dates: Thursday, 3/18th, 6:30pm at Pitkin Community Center Mentors and students with their parents will meet. The actual date for Shadowing are TBD. Mentors are always needed. Please consider sharing a day with a Wethersfield high school junior. If you are interested in becoming one of our mentors please call the chamber office at (860) 721-6200 to receive additional details.
